Feeding Instructions and Nutrition

How much can I feed my dog?

As with any pet product labeled as a treat or snack, Milk-Bone® dog treats should not be substituted for a balanced diet, and treats should make up no more than 10% of your dog's caloric intake. We've placed feeding guidelines on each package. We strongly advise against exceeding these guidelines. Your dog's veterinarian can also provide guidance on how many calories your dog may consume daily.

Can I feed Milk-Bone® treats to my puppy?

For puppies, we recommend our Milk-Bone® Puppy Biscuits, which are specially formulated for dogs 1 year and younger. As with any pet product labeled as a treat or snack, Milk-Bone® dog treats should not be substituted for a balanced diet, and treats should make up no more than 10% of your puppy or small dog's caloric intake. As you would with any new food or treat, keep a watchful eye on your dog as the new treat is enjoyed. You may want to consider breaking or cutting the treats into smaller pieces if your dog has a tendency to gulp food without chewing.

Milk-Bone® Brushing Chews™ are not recommended for puppies. Puppies have unique nutritional needs as they grow, and Brushing Chews™ are formulated for adult dogs.

What is the shelf life of Milk-Bone® dog treats?

The "Best if Used By" date will be listed on either the back or on the bottom of the package.

Milk-Bone® Brushing Chews™

How do Milk-Bone® Brushing Chews™ differ from Milk-Bone® biscuits?

Milk-Bone® biscuits are America's favorite and most trusted dog treat. It is a crunchy biscuit. Milk-Bone® Brushing Chews™ were scientifically designed and formulated to help maintain canine oral health. They have a unique formula, firmer texture, patent-pending twisted shape, unique toothpaste-like package, longer chew time, and have undergone clinical testing to earn the VOHC Seal of Acceptance for tartar control.

How effective are they?

When fed daily, Milk-Bone® Brushing Chews™ dental treats are clinically proven to be as effective as brushing a dog's teeth twice a week based on the reduction of tartar build-up and bad breath. They've even received the VOHC Seal of Acceptance for tartar control. (The VOHC evaluates pet products much like the American Dental Association measures the efficacy of human oral care products.)

What is the chew time?

Milk-Bone® Brushing Chews™ achieved average chew times from two to four minutes.

How often should they be fed?

To ensure dogs are getting the best results possible with Milk-Bone® Brushing Chews™, pet parents should feed one treat per day to their dogs. As with any pet product labeled as a treat or a snack, Milk-Bone® Brushing Chews™ should not be substituted for a balanced diet, and treats should make up no more than 10% of the dog's caloric intake. We strongly advise against exceeding these guidelines. We recommend to owners that their veterinarian can also provide guidance on how many calories their dog should consume daily. As with any edible product, ensure the treat is adequately chewed. Gulping any items can be harmful or cause serious injury to a dog.

Do you have a large size?

Unfortunately, we don't have a Large size right now, but are now working to develop one. It will be recommended only for dogs that weigh 75 pounds and up. If you would like us to let you know when the Large size will be available, please click here.

Can I feed the mini or small/medium Brushing Chews™ to a dog larger than 74 lb?

We recommend always following the feeding instructions for the size dog you own. We do not recommend feeding the Mini or Small/Medium size to a dog larger than 74 pounds or a Small/Medium size to a dog under 25 pounds. However, we are working on a Large size.

What is the Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC) Seal of Acceptance?

VOHC is an international organization of board certified veterinary dentist specialists formed by the American Veterinary Dental College and endorsed by the Academy of Veterinary Dentistry and American Veterinary Dental Society. VOHC evaluates the effectiveness of veterinary oral care products similar to how the American Dental Association (ADA), measures the efficacy of human products. Products that carry the VOHC Seal of Acceptance have demonstrated via clinical testing that they successfully meet strict criteria for effectiveness in controlling plaque and/or tartar accumulation in dogs.

Will regular use of Milk-Bone® Brushing Chews™ replace the need for veterinary dental cleanings?

Milk-Bone® Brushing Chews™ are designed to be used as an at-home adjunct to annual veterinary exams and periodic professional dental cleanings. Each product package features a recommendation for the dog to receive annual veterinary dental check-ups, as well as recommended daily use of the product.

How digestible are Milk-Bone® Brushing Chews™?

This included extensive feeding trials, both in our own facilities and at third party facilities, and reviews by multiple leading external experts in the field of canine oral care. Digestibility was a key focal point of these trials.
